As part of the virtual-career training programs and weekly telework bulletin we provide the US Department of State, Armed Forces and other clients, we’ve been researching home-based job leads online almost every day for years. Here are 10 quick tips you can use in your own research to find jobs and freelance projects you can do at home, in your dorm, or in the cafe. (In my next post, I’ll talk about how to tell legitimate leads from scams.)
1. Two good sites for "virtual" jobs generally are Workaholics4Hire and GenuineJobs.com.
2. For blogging jobs, try ProBlogger’s job board. Professional blogger Darren Rowse, who runs the site, also provides comprehensive advice on how to develop and monetize your blog at ProBlogger.net.
3. For writing gigs of all kinds, check out JournalismJobs.com.
4. Most people know about Guru for general freelancing jobs, but there’s also the younger-but-growing oDesk.
5. CraigsList carries many home-based jobs and projects (though beware dubious leads), but it takes time to find them. For shortcuts, see our article, “How to Find Work at Home Job Listings on CraigsList.”
6. IT jobs of many kinds can be found at Dice.
7. For legal jobs (US-oriented), see Lawjobs.com.
8. Looking for translating or interpreting gigs? Try TranslatorsCafe.com.
9. Medical transcriptionists can find a good selection of gigs at MTJobs.com.
10. For screened leads, see our own home-based jobs board, at RatRaceRebellion.com. Also check out the screened links under “WAH Job Leads / Hirers by Field.”
Good hunting!
