Want to work at home (or anywhere) on Second Life, the artificial world online? Two university-related programs are certifying people to do just that.
As "Glenn Linden" (a Second Life pseudonym) mentioned yesterday in a Second Life blog post, the programs are being offered by the University of Washington and ImagiLearning.
"Over 70 students have completed the Virtual Learning Experience [from ImagiLearning], which is geared to help individuals in transition re-think and re-culture themselves to better position themselves for work in the emerging digital culture," he said.
Northrop Grumman, IBM and many other corporations are already on Second Life, as are a host of universities internationally, from Harvard to the University of South Australia.
Working as an "avatar" (an artificial being who represents you in a virtual world) might have its clumsier moments for those new to Second Life and similar environments (I'm none too adept myself). But at the very least, these programs illustrate the Internet's stunning potential to transform the way we work.
